International Student Admission Requirements for Australia

Health Insurance

Australia has a special system of health cover for international students called Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), which help students to pay their medical expenses while they are studying in Australia. It also covers the cost of most prescription medicines and an ambulance in an emergency. It is a requirement of your student visa as well.

OSHC insurers offer a wide range of OSHC products from basic product to comprehensive products. Basic product covers the compulsory services whereas comprehensive products include extra services as specified under the particular policy.

Remember, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship requires overseas students to maintain OSHC for the duration of time they are in Australia.

Along with Overseas Student Health there are other types of insurances as well.

Private health insurance

If the student wants to cover the items which OSHC does not cover, then they can opt for a private health insurance. Students can decide whether private health insurance should cover him/her or their family as well. Eligibility, membership costs, and benefits can vary greatly between funds and insurance policies, so while buying health insurance make sure that the kind of health insurance you selected is suitable for your needs.

Travel insurance

Travel Insurance can help you cover any mishaps like lost luggage or cancelled flights while you are travelling. Especially, it will be helpful while you are carrying your valuable belongings or when you are on a travel schedule you have to meet. You can arrange travel insurance through a range of providers including travel booking companies, airlines, or travel insurance companies.

Home and contents insurance

The name itself suggests that the Home and contents insurance covers your home and your home appliances such as clothes, furniture, and other interior. If you are paying rent, building owner will be responsible for the insurance. But contents insurance is worth when you couldn't afford to replace them very easily if something happened to them.

Vehicle insurance

Depending on the state or territory you live in Australia, you may need to buy insurance. For example, in New South Wales everyone who is having a four wheeler must buy a Third Party insurance that covers personal injuries caused to someone else in an accident. Hence it is better to check with the relevant government agency in their state or territory whether the vehicle insurance is compulsory or not.

Some third party insurances also cover storm, flood, and fire effects and malicious and accidental damages. So be wise while choosing the right one.
